YOU CAN HAVE IT IF YOU WANT IT

I recently (summertime) helped my friend Joel Calvin work on a video for his band Oh No Oh My's song "You Can Have It If You Want It." You can peep my lips close to the beginning of the video.

The best part of this video is that it basically just features a bunch of my friends and my sister. Check out the rest of Joel's work on his Vimeo. Can't wait to work on another video with him! Still in the works: Voyeur promo video.

INTERVIEW: YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN | SHOW TONIGHT!

Everybody knows Xiu Xiu. I remember blasting "I Luv The Valley OH" with my sister and feeling as misunderstood as Jamie Stewart in high school. I was happy to hear the band was returning to Austin tomorrow night (at Mohawk) on their North American tour. I had been seeing their passage through the states and Canada with Dirty Beaches and Father Murphy.

The line up took on a change mid-way though and Dirty Beaches was replaced by YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN. This band's music and performance is as big and exciting (and experimental) as their name suggests. There is no way for you to understand their music through text, so I suggest you give it a listen (below). They create music they have self-dubbed "Noh-wave" in reference to No Wave and Noh, a classical form of Japanese musical drama.

I lucked out on an opportunity to interview the band's core, drummer Alaska B and singer Ruby Kato Attwood about influences and what to expect from their show.

+++++

I saw you listed Boris and Gwar as a few of your musical and stage inspirations. Are there any visual artists you are particularly inspired by?
Ruby: I'm influenced by documentarian footage of ritual performance.

Alaska: The artists I hate influence me the most. If its challenging to my taste, it instigates my response through imitation or resistance. So I guess I love hate my favourite artists. Love:  Zhang Huan, Takashi Murakami, Marina Abramovic, Tenjo Sajiki. Love hate: Matthew Barney.

Are there any other bands you would consider "Noh-Wave"?
Alaska: Noh-pe

What are some of the strangest items you've transformed into instruments?
Alaska: Clothesline and 1x6 plank gu Zheng, 50s egg timer bass, a water chestnut can shamisen or a megaphone tamboura. I also built an infamous set of electronic drums out of a Rock Band kit back in 2008. We don't use them as much live, but they still rear their heads every so often.

I have new ones in the work. Right now my baby is our new 8-panel DIY-led light rig I built with Aylwin Lo for under $600. Our lightning designer Alana Ruth is currently using it on tour. Designed to be modular, I plan to keep increasing its capabilities. It can already sync to Ableton live and MIDI.

What are some of the best reactions to your performances?
Alaska: When a kid at ATP in England somehow knew all of our lyrics. Or maybe when I jumped into the pit at our false alarm farewell show back in 2009 and managed to send even seasoned extreme musicians terrified into the corners with a violent head smashing performance. I've had to cut those down though; I can't take as much abuse as I used to.

Ruby: A guy in San Francisco told us that he finally understood the connection between meditation and doom metal. Generally, the response from our fans have been amazing, and we want to come back even better than ever on a headlining tour

Some of the worst?
Ruby: All reactions are good. Whatever they want to think is half of it.
Alaska: I guess 50% is a passing grade no matter how you spin it.

Have you been to Austin before?
Alaska: Noh-pe. But our other singer, Ange Loft, might be the first Mohawk to ever perform at the Mohawk

What do you have planned for the performance at Mohawk in Austin?
Alaska: Due to touring's limitations, we've toned down a lot of our stageshow. I won't be doing any of our more intense performance pieces, because I have to play night after night, and drumming is already physically demanding. Our cardboard sets are definitely limited as they can't survive that many shows, and with less time to set up, we can't do the absurd spectacles we became known for. But we still plan to put on a killer light show and play a solid set. The audience won't be disappointed.

SHOW INFO:
Xiu Xiu, YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN and Father Murphy
Where: Mohawk, 912 Red River
When: Doors at 9, show at 10
How much: $10 advance, $12 at door

See you there!

If you kind of like my friend Paul Banks' music (Paul Banks and the Carousels) and at least want to see what he can make for us, please give him your support on Kickstarter. I gave money, and I'm no Miss Money Bags. He's only $410 short of his goal this moment [3/26/12 8:30PM], so help scoot him along his way. Ten days to go...

BLEACH X TOKYO PLUM

Hey guys, it's been a little while since I've updated about anything non-SXSW related. The time is now.

I thought I'd post about my recent work for
Bleach Online's latest issue
Tokyo Plum, which released the end of February.

BEN AQUA
+ I got the opportunity to
interview artist Ben Aqua again. I also had the lovely opportunity to get photographed by the man himself in some self-done face paint. Ben was one of my first features on Voyeur.

TAR + HONEY
+ Was also incredibly happy to get to help publish my friend Kristin Wong's work. She was shooting an all Asian girl gang photo series, which was the perfect complement to the issue; view the rest of the images and read my interview with one of my oldest, dearest friends here. (I've also featured Kristin on Voyeur, I just can't help myself.)

TASHAKI MIYAKI
+ I had the honor of interviewing emerging band Tashaki Miyaki, whose music I've adored since I first heard their Everly Brother's "All I Have To Do" cover.

RIMEL NEFFATI
+ Thanks to Jacqueline, I was introduced to the portraits of Rimel Neffati, a photographer from Paris who produces some of the most eerie and captivating images I've seen. I was also able to interview her.

LOVE IN TIME
+ I styled a shoot with Danny Yirgou in Granger, TX, featuring models Justin Kitchen, Connie Mobley, John Kolar and Ashton Smotherman (in order of appearance).

MUSIC: FAVE 5 IN 2011

I thought I'd pretend like I was some sort of major music blog and tell everyone a few of my favorite new songs (artists and videos) from 2011. I feel like a lot of really great stuff came out last year, or maybe I've just been paying closer attention.

"nothing can change this love" -TASHAKI MIYAKI

This LA band is so shrouded in mystery, which makes me like them even more. I have a chance to interview them soon, very excited. Been loving on all of their covers, including this and "All I have to do is dream," and self-titled EP.

"Don't Go Out Tonight" -IDIOT GLEE

Got a chance to interview James Friley last time he came to Austin to play a show. Haven't been able to stop listening to his music since. Super talented, and if you read his Twitter, all he talks about is food.

"July" -YOUTH LAGOON

From Boise, Idaho, this kid (Trevor Powers) has been getting the most attention out of this top 5 this past year. His debut album is 100% good, which is hard to come by.

"Sweetest Touch" -GROSS MAGIC

Obsessed with all of Teen Jamz, but this song is my favorite. Dig his (Sam McGarrigle) whole vibe.

"Easy" -PURE X

Straight out of Austin, and genius video by Malcolm Elijah.

Bonus guilty pleasure song: "BLUE JEANS" - LANA DEL REY

An addendum:
"Lord Knows Best" -DIRTY BEACHES

2011 felt so long, I didn't realize Dirty Beaches was 2011. Badlands slays me.

XMAS SPIRIT

Sorry for not posting, just getting into the Christmas spirit, kind of. I can't believe it snuck up on me, and I haven't planned even one present yet. I don't even really know what I want, which is atypical for me. I used to compile wish lists far in advance. I guess things change when you start being able to buy things yourself.

Now for one of the best parts of the holiday, there is music to accompany --

ft. Madonna, Elvis, Nsync, and all the other greats.
Kristin of Galz-R-Us was my last contributor for Voyeur.

Alternatively, for some Christmas covers by Idiot Glee (who I interviewed here)

I think Sleigh Ride is my favorite, too. Downloads are $1, but you can give it a listen for free, same goes for his previous year's covers "An Idiot Glee Christmas."

FUN FUN FUN VIDEO

Love the scenes of Johnny rocking out.
I wish someone would make a montage video like this of my daily life. It might be a lot more boring though.

Can't wait till the next time.

HAPPY DAY: IDIOT GLEE

I came across Idiot Glee during a weird time in my life. Okay, so I'm still kind of currently stuck in that time, since that was just earlier this month. I had been dumped, had a tumultuous Chicago trip, found a mouse in my apartment... I'll spare you the details. Suffice to say, I was in a weird emotional state: part confused, part melancholia, basic post-teen angst. Well, when I came across Idiot Glee through an email press release and gave the music a listen, I was oddly drawn in by the sound. Even if I didn't catch all of the lyrics immediately, just the droning, fuzzy sounds and deep, crooning voice were enough to hit a note in me.

James Friley, the man behind the music, was kind enough to let me ask him a few basic - and oddly prying - questions about Austin, Mormonism and movies.

What is better in Austin than where you're from?
The BBQ. It's good in Lexington, but really the beef brisket here is mmmmm...

What was your favorite experience in Austin?
The venue and locals were incredibly nice. I just get a good vibe from the place. Also, all of my meals were delicious. Touring is half about music, half about food.

Favorite city you've visited on tour (ever)?
Dang... umm, Berlin. Maybe.

Dream future destination?
Japan please!

And since he'd been interviewed by VICE solely about his Mormon background, I couldn't help but ask
Besides not drinking alcohol, what is the most Mormon thing about you?
Haha...I don't drink coffee*, either. I've tried it so many times. I want to like it. How do you people drink it? GROSS.

What is the least?
Fuck.

Let me try this again: Marry, Boff, Kill - Kirsten Dunst, Zooey Deschanel, Kristen Bell
Oh goody. Wait... who the hell is Kristen Bell? Let me Google this... hold on. Ok just did. Still don't know... buuut, kill Kristen Bell, boff Zooey Deschanel, and marry Kirsten Dunst.

Oops, I mean to say Kristen Stewart, the girl from the Twilight movies.
Hmmm... haha. I think it's the same! She's "meh".

Now the time travel/blonde version: 80s Debbie Harry, 80s Madonna, 80s Cyndi Lauper
Much better... and more difficult. Kill Cyndi Lauper, boff Madonna, marry Debbie Harry. Maybe switch the last two... tough one.

What was your favorite movie growing up? What is it now?
Growing up it was probably Star Wars. Or Dumb & Dumber. My siblings and I would watch Dumb & Dumber all the time... I'm not sure now. I like all the Coen Brothers films a lot, and I think Anchorman is hilarious. Bill Murray.

Favorite soundtrack?
Hmm... I'm going to cheat and say The Art Of Piano. It's about all the great pianists of the early 20th century. I saw it in high school and fell in love with every piece. I'm still trying to finish learning all of them.

If you were going to make music for a movie, what kind of movie would it be?
I scored a documentary last year on James Baker Hall. It was all solo piano pieces... I would love to do that again. A very dark, yet inspiring film... I think I'm better at scoring images with darker themes. But I'd have a blast with a western, or really anything. I want to become part of that world eventually.

What could it be about?
Anything except for a dog's death... can't handle dead dogs.

What projects are you working on? Anything major coming up?
Dunno about major, but I am recording and writing songs. I haven't figured out if it will be an EP or LP... also, a few tape labels want to do releases. So, likely 2 or 3 releases in the next 6 months. Also, heading to CMJ and SXSW next year.

I waited to post this interview to include these pictures of the set I caught, wish they had turned out better. His small show at 29th Street Ballroom with locals Boy Friend was great. It was probably the best intimate show I've seen in a long time. He even covered Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine, which has always been a favorite classic of mine.

So you know what seeing Idiot Glee live is kind of like --

Can't wait to catch another set come SXSW.

*Note: I also don't drink coffee. Iced soy chais are a nice sweet caffeine substitute, even if you feel like a total yuppy ordering them.

DATA HUSTLER: MALCOLM ELIJAH

When I first met Malcolm Elijah Welbourne, or just Eli, it was in an 'out' setting, maybe a house party, maybe a show. Anyway, a Facebook friendship was forged, and since, I've been able to have a somewhat sideline view of all of the spectacular art that he was producing and taking part of. Recently, a music video he produced for Pure X's "Easy" was featured on Gorilla Vs. Bear, FADER and other reputable sites. And while, I was very impressed by his work for Pure X (and will surely be when his second video for them debuts in the coming weeks), my eyes keep on going back to his Nitemare Gas cycles I found on his Vimeo.

I liked them so much, I thought I'd e-pester Eli until I got squeezed some questions out of him.

First of all -- what was your purpose behind the Nitemare Gas cycles? What are you trying to convey in them?
Eli: The Nitemare Gas vids were initially used in a sculptural installation piece in which I painted a large gas tank gold and gave the appearance as if it was feeding gas into a pseudo religious altar with a television, candles, small figurines of praying hands, lambs, cherubs... My thoughts were tracing around the ideas of some sort of contemporary alchemy, as if we were using a strange blend of gas' to create what we see on a television.

I liked the idea of different chemical reactions happening inside of a box that gives you an unstable image to look at. Sparks, odd lights, images phasing in and out of focus, etc. So the effect of the videos was actually a product of the format and machine you were viewing it in.

The video itself was intended to be something of a living portrait. I left the prompt for the subjects intentionally vague so there was a degree of self-interpretation and a natural honesty that came through to the camera. Some people were nervous, unsure... some people ate the camera up and posed, got into characters, shot sultry looks. No matter how they acted, it in a sense was an honest portrayal of how one behaves when given a set of circumstances to react to. Just video chemistry. I couldn't have fully anticipated what would come out, so it really was the essence of everyone's effort that made the video, I just tried to display the subtleties I caught.

The scenario I had imagined was a self-induced gas chamber that gives you wide sensation of dreamlike experiences ranging from euphoria, terror, and disorientation. The sculpture was like looking into a crystal ball and peering into the states of others intoxication.

How did you get into making film / art / music... what order did it come in?

I think there was always interest in all 3, and they each influence each other, but my exposure and practice of them was very ordered.

My first interest was music. Started playing upright bass in school orchestra and bass guitar when I was 10, but my father is a musician, and I had been exposed to music all my life. I definitely made it a goal to become a multi-instrumentalist young. Picked up guitar, cello, piano, mandolin, and eventually synthesis which is where I'm focusing now. Collecting vintage synthesizers and pondering sound design/production have been a theme lately, but I value all instruments. I've also been lucky enough to work with the local synth shop Switched On as well. I've played in a lot of various bands around Austin. I'm currently involved with Silent Diane and Sleep Over.

Art came second:
I always was interested in animation and drew a lot growing up, but I think when I was about 16, I started thinking more about conceptual art and analogous relationships to humans ----> images and objects.
Music definitely is a catalyst for my thinking though. Music that inspires me has direct visual connotation on my dome. Eventually, I met some of my best friends in Totally Wreck and our sense of humor and absurdist kind of spirit got channeled into this fucked up art collective based around Internet archaeology and occult fantasy, which really stimulated my interest and gave me people to circulate ideas around.

Video/Film/Photography are a format I'm the most interested in right now. I think that video is one of the most relevant or influential mediums because of how many media devices make it accessible and palatable to human attention. It doesn't have to revolve around exclusive circles or gallery settings, although I do like to prepare a certain experience in which my work is viewed, I like the flexibility of it.
Video is more of a linear, time-based artform which is relative to my experience with music. Photography is also relevant to me in a sense where I can draw upon subtleties of intimacy and activity in a single image.
I feel very young at it, but the most passionate.

What artists in or outside of Austin are you into right now?
Im unsure of how to satisfy this question, but...
Im lucky enough to say my favorite artists in Austin are among my friends. Even if they don't. Ben Aqua, Juan Cisneros, Amanda Joy, Ryan Davis, Scott Gelber, Aaron Flynn, Seth Nemec, Zak Loyd, Melanie Clemmons, Tommy Blackburn, Carlos Rosales Silva, Dylan Reece, and many more. Some of the most interesting art I feel is not made by people who consider themselves artists by trade, whether it's conscious or incidental.

I've found a lot of inspiration from classic video artists like Toshio Matsumoto, Zbigniew RybczyƄski, Nam Joon Paik, and Kenneth Anger.

People creating post-ironic, Internet-based phenomena art like Ryan Trecartin and Ryder Ripps make me smile with their art. Lots of net art surfacing and gaining aesthetic cohesion.

Sometimes I don't even know who it is that is inspiring me with sites like tumblr.... Any random image I want to bookmark I post here.

Drop

feat. Rick Genest interview, Mugler Fall 2011 show, new earring courtesy of Arrow, photobooth images from Renegade Craft Fair, new skirt/dress from Charm School Vintage, my tattoo you didn't know I have.

Let me get this straight- I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga, but I do really love the runway show. "Things" have been pretty much the same. Making an effort to blog more, and put more into them than just dropping fliers (unless that's all you guys want). What can I say? I'm a people pleaser. Kind of.

Let's do something interesting this summer.

Feeling //TENSE//

I'm going to the gay biker, leather daddy bar Thursday night to catch //TENSE//, who I did some research on and decided I really like.

These videos are made by Tommyboy (whose name I recognize from going to The Party in Dallas back in the day). I remember liking his work then, and I like it even more now that I've discovered these videos. These are my favorite videos / songs -- pretty much in order of how much I like them.

Video post I

I went to the Peelander Z in-store at End of an Ear a while back and didn't realize all of the footage was used for this Taco Taco Tacos video, including a bunch of taco eateries around town. Awesome.

Also, I was in this Traffique video shot at an acquaintances apartment a little while back. Not a lot. I'm not sure how I feel about the editing.
