Not in Austin Weekend

Dallas, I love you, but you're bringing me down.

I'm posting from Dallas this weekend. Hope you guys all had fulfilling Thanksgivings and some time off work/school. Thank goodness for that time off, I was working nonstop before I caught this break. It's time to figure out what's going on in Austin this weekend, even if I can't necessarily be there.

I'll probably be going to one of these Dallas events:

FRIDAY:
DO NOT go to the S.Austin party (off William Cannon) It was really last night and I'm a dumb ass.

Richard.Gear will be DJing at Plush, too, at about 10-11. You guys know I'm and avid Gear supporter.

SATURDAY:

What the hell else is going on Saturday?

Fantastico Thursssday

Only thing worth going to tomorrow night (Thursday) and it's at the Black & Tan, of course. My friend Miguel, AKA Mr. Fantastico, AKA uLOVEi, is DJing [along with D.L.R.D.] and I have gotten a chance this weekend to sneak preview his new stuff and let me tell you, it's good. Very danceable. He also promised me he'd play Calabria for me, so that is even more the incentive to go. As long as you love the song as much as I do.

ALSO: The Famousish will be there giving out free tickets to Flosstradamus (on Friday). This is the last place you can get tickets, so if you missed out on it on Saturday at Disco Villains then jump on it! See you there.

Beyond the Pink Mohawk:
Richard.Gear feature

Austin nightlife mongers know the disc jockey with the cotton-candy-pink mane simply as Richard Gear, but his name is not Richard Gear. It isn’t even Richard.

Weaving in and out of the Tuesday night crowd at the local bar Black & Tan, the 24-year-old DJ dances as guest DJ Markus with a K plays a disco-house mix. Tuesday nights at Austin Chronicle’s voted best new bar are piloted by DJ Richard Gear under the self-explanatory title Sounds!Fun!. Richard Gear is the DJ pseudonym of Robert David Schacherl, whose friends call him Davey.

Schacherl has been deejaying for over half of his life, since the ripe age of 12, when he received his first set of turntables. He says he has always been exposed to the music scene because his parents operated various discos in Austin and throughout Texas in the mid 1990s. His parents’ friends, who were DJs, mentored young Schacherl and a DJ was born.

Schacherl has dabbled in just about every genre of club music, it seems. At 14, he began going to raves. Soon after, he grew fond of drum and bass, a style of music characterized by the fast break-beats. He deejayed several Austin clubs such as Plush, Velvet and Spiro’s. By 18, he obtained a weekly set on Monday nights at the Whisky Bar, where he had a live drum and bass set with a friend. Schacherl received an associate’s degree in commercial music management with an emphasis on audio engineering and recording at Austin Community College and worked as an engineer and producer at a local recording studio. There, he worked with notable local bands such as Ringo Deathstarr and The War Against Sleep. These days you can catch him catering to the hipster crowd with his electro, Baltimore club and banging techno music, he said. For the near future, Schacherl has some new surprises up his sleeve.

“I’m trying to work my way into the gay scene,” he said, mentioning the prominent gay bar Oilcan Harry’s, where he’d be able to play more “clubby dance music” and “play stuff the hipster crowd wouldn’t be into.” He is also looking into a different weekly to reach a different crowd, a soul night somewhere, two or three monthly gigs and producing some music, he said.

As for long-term goals, Schacherl said he would like to continue doing what he is doing. He said he is not anticipating on becoming a huge superstar DJ but would like to make a living in the music industry. “I’d like to be respected musically by people I respect musically,” he said.

Schacherl has earned himself an honorable reputation in the local DJ scene already.

In response to being asked what motivates Schacherl, he said, “watching people dance, being able to play something people react to.” Every Tuesday night, various friends and newcomers visit Black & Tan to hear Schacherl DJ and to move their bodies along to the music reverberating throughout the dim-lit club.

Every Sounds!Fun! guest for the rest of the year. Dec. 9 sounds fun.
My Opinion: Richard.Gear is definitely a staple Austin DJ -- one of the best. You can tell he knows his shit and does what he does well. He seems to really enjoy the music, too, never afraid to move along to it. Go check him out at B&T on Tuesday if you haven't already.

Weekend Warrior

This weekend has officially revitalized weekends for me.
In review, starting with Friday, there was the party where Miguel (I think his DJ name is Mr. Fantastico) and Doneski DJ'd, driving around and jamming out to music and late night Starseed's frito pies.

Saturday, my special appearance at Coldtowne ended up being so much better than I'd envisioned. I think it was one of the coolest things I've done in Austin thus far. Never imagined being on a stage, under beaming lights, would be so nerve-racking but easy at the same time. The improv comedians are really talented, reminiscent of "Who's line is it anyways?" but better/local for un-comedy-educated people like myself. Seriously though, if you're ever in the neighborhood, and want somewhere to hang out on a Saturday before you go out, it's just an hour long, really funny, and BYOB.

Disco Villains killed it at Black and Tan. I got to meet the two DJs and TonyEdit said he loved Austin. He said it was by far the best show and the best audience and that he wants to move here! What a high compliment. After party was also great until cops showed up.

There's something big coming up, ya'll. If you've been keeping up all this time, OUTWITHME's 3rd birthday is coming up, and it's on a Friday. So, let's wait and see what goes down.

Weakender: Disco Villains

FRIDAY:

Live Music, Local Band Lovers go to this. Plus, I would've loved a chance at ringing in the new president properly. That Nov4 was simply too mellow for me. Did you see videos from Time Square? Obama Girl was there.

Just got wind of this something that John Gomi does, it looks like it'd be worth checking out at the least.

Not sure what this is about, but it looks pretty.

Great, I was waiting for a house party to come along and here one is. Doneski of TheFamousish will be DJ-ing at a place on 7th and Pedernales with The Shaky Hands of Portland.

If all else fails, B&T is always a viable option.

SATURDAY:
DON'T FORGET -- I'm doing that Coldtowne gig (see post 100!!! below) tonight at 8PM, (It is located at 4803-B Airport Blvd. next to the I Luv Video)

*I'm bringing 2 friends as my guests, but I don't have 3 friends, so if you'd like to go for free, shoot Chris (christrew@gmail.com) and e-mail asking to be put on the guest-list and you can be my 3rd.*

Car Stereo Wars!

I don't know if I believe the promise of 1,000,000 kegs, but it should be fun. Catatak always brings it. But, it is a birthday party so be courteous. Hope this girl Jaime has as much fun at her's as I did at mine.

This one is my top priority of the night, for sure. Disco Villains (does it bug anyone else that the flier is spelled wrong?) with Richard.Gear and Doneski! Plus, for the first time in a long time a single event at Black and Tan will take over the back area and the inside, like when Designer Drugs came over the summer for XXX-mas in July.

Can't wait.

100!!!

Post #100 of this blog:

I have an announcement to go along with it/which also kind of fits into this being my 100th blog.

This Saturday, I will be the guest monologist at the weekly Coldtowne Theater's "Stool Pigeon" routine. [click for detail on the event] Coldtowne, "Austin's newest refuge for comedy," is a pretty new comedy venue, opened 2006, but it is already receiving high accolades.

"The cast of Stool Pigeon reads like a Who's Who of Austin improv. Each week, a new cast of award-winning performers, sketch comedy writers, theater managers, festival producers, and touring improvisers come together to twist the stories of a local celebrity guest into completely improvised scenes. Sponsored by The Onion.

Tonight's Pigeon is blogger Tiffany Diane of Austin Is Burning." -From the site.

Calling me a "local celebrity guest" is probably more flattering than true, but I was happy to be asked to take part in something so cool, regardless, even though public speaking or comedy (unless being laughed at counts) are not things I normally take part in. Couldn't miss the chance though. Chris Trew (terp2it), who asked me to do this, recently performed at FFFFest -- he was Jesus -- and the Coldtowne comedy crew had a set on the comedy stage. Didn't catch it, but I'll assume it was badass.

Now, I just have to make sure I don't make an ass of myself or stutter. Any ideas for a good monologue? ($7-$10)
-Tiffany Diane

P.S. Come out to support me if you can.

GOLD N' GHOULS

Okay, first of all - awesome play on words with the "golden girls."
Clever, I like that.

Go Go Garcia sent me this mix tonight, which is a first for me, actually.
[Click it to DL] Listen to local DJs! I also like how Diplo and Sinden and The Count and Sinden are included because they were just in town. Timeliness.
Enjoy,
TD

learningsecrets v. altarofbang

I think that line-up is enough to put off studying and work for. Plus, don't we all just need a mid-week break (already)? I do.

-TD

FINALLY

Okay, so I'm not huge on celebrity gossip or anything, (and that is not what this blog is about) but I do admit to being obsessed with Marilyn Manson. I am happy to say that him, 39, and Evan Rachel Wood, 21, broke it off officially sometime last week. I admire her acting, but I've never been a huge fan of her. And when one of your idols dates someone who is just okay and your age, it's a kick in the face.

Who would want to date a clone of their ex-wife anyhow?
It's kind of eerie.

In Retrospect

This weekend has been really weird.

Thursday night, going to the Scion event and dancing the entire night and retiring to a Frito Pie at Starseed's afterward was really rewarding. Ending my night really early to take care of a friend Friday night was alright. How was the Lamar Pedestrian Bridge, everybody? Dancing on the stage with Z-Trip at FFFFest Saturday, which I didn't plan on going to, was probably the highlight of my weekend. The drama at Black and Tan was just awkward/entertaining. Don't really know what was going on with that.
Now it's time to decompress and do a shitload of work.

© Dániel Perlaky [FLICKR]
He has a few FFF photos up already, that one is from Dan Deacon on the electro stage.

Q:
Where and when can I get my hands on some of those Z-Trip photos?
