Triple 3D Party

This new bowling alley / entertainment station, High Ball, seems like it's cracked out to be one of Austin's newest hot spots. It is in association with the creators of Alamo Drafthouse, another great location, and will include karaoke, bowling, skee ball, bar and dining -- who could ask for more? Why not check it out this Wednesday for Fantastic Fest DJ dance party, with different genres of music from the 80s, 90s and 00s. This place is bound to be the location of many ridiculous memories to come.

While you are reading this, don't forget to RSVP to Art Disater (Oct 1) and Learning Secrets Unofficial ACL after-party (Oct 2), both at the Beauty Bar this weekend.

Two shows tonight:

I forgot how amazing Showlist Austin is, but was quickly reminded today as I decided to do some research on everything that is going on this coming week -- it's going to be a hectic one. First of all, you should visit their page yourself, but here are some of my own highlights.

by Miles Jones

Yellow Fever will be kicking off their tour with a show at The Parlor off North Loop. The sound at this venue may be a little janky, but nothing beats the pizza parlor atmosphere and the small venue vibe.

Also, Journey is playing at the Frank Erwin Center... I always seem to hear about these big name, old bands coming in way, way late. Not that I would ever have the funds to go see one of them (tickets are $39 - $79 dollars depending on seating), but it would still be helpful if I could post these things in a timely manner rather than hours before. Anyway, this music video reminded me of the glory that is / was Journey recently.

Stay tuned, I am coming back to tell you guys about the bowling alley party tomorrow night (and a million shows).

A letter to all of you

Hello Readers,

Let me just take the time out to address all of you out there reading this. First of all, thank you for doing so. It always surprises me that people take interest in what I have to say or trust my opinion on what's good. It means a lot to me every time somebody approaches me in public and says something nice or people want me to post about their band because they think this little blog has any sway.

I also wanted to notify all of you about the changes I have made to the blog. First few changes of many to come. First, I have an official e-mail address for all things Austin is Burning blog related now. It is located in the right panel and is austinisburning@gmail.com. Who doesn't love G-mail? Second, I have taken the suggestion of one great reader, who entered my KVRX ticket giveaway, about making an events listing -- something that everybody can refer to quickly about what is going on on the calender, without having to scroll through every blog I have written. It is also located to the right under my Human Calendar. You'll probably notice some small aesthetic changes constantly happening -- there are more to come. I am so finicky about style, plus I want to make this a blog you are not embarrassed to be looking at in class or at work.

Also, I wanted to tell you guys about stuff I have coming up, little things and big things. First of all, hopefully you noticed my little "sponsorship" on the Art Disaster or Learning Secrets Unofficial After Party fliers. Those are going to be amazing events - be sure to go to those at the Beauty Bar this Thursday and Friday (&RSVP). Second, I have a little something of my own in the making hopefully. I want to extend a formal invitation to all of my readers, friends and family. I am excited about this one and can't wait to confirm some information so I can unload all of it on you guys. Keep posted.

Again, thank you to everybody reading this now.
Much love,
Td

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Here's another impressive event tonight at the Mohawk. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are one of my favorite on-the-rise bands this year. They played more than a dozen shows during SXSW and have one self-titled full-length album out. It's amazing, you've got to hear it. The show starts at 9. Tickets are $10, totally worth it.

A conversation piece -

The Screamer Company, an award-winning design and branding group here in Austin, is putting on an event tonight (from 6 - 10 p.m.) at the United States Arts Authority, off Fruth St. by the Spiderhouse. Inside, 14 talented local artists will be featured. Here's the kicker, there will be free drinks and possibly hors d'oeurves, and a nifty little art book for every attendee.
+Check this one out from last year:

RSVP for Oct 2.

Now, this is what's up! Go, go, go to the RSVP page and do it now! An RSVP to this event guarantees a $5 door charge, rather than 8.

P.S. Does anybody see my cute little logo on the bottom right? I made it specifically for the month of October. What a special month. (Also, free drinks for the first 100 people?)

By the way, isn't this video adorable? I love it. Look for my shout out at the end.

Anoche

So, I don't know if you've heard the news but Back Alley Social, formerly known as Whisky Bar, is now renamed "Social" and will be hosting more and more live music bands starting this week. Tonight is The Pearl Tones, with three members of Paul Banks and the Carousels.

Secrets, secrets ...

So, word on the block is that Learning Secrets is brewing up a huge, unofficial ACL after-party this year. Evidently, this is a party that is bound to blow all other parties out of the water - not to discard all of Learning Secrets' previous parties. Last year's ACL after-party with Hot Chip and Drums of Death was one of the best ones of the year. They've also brought us amazing acts like Hercules and Love Affair and The Juan Maclean over the past 5 years. I have definitely testified my love for these event planners - on this blog and in the June issue of Rare Magazine.

A special thank you to Learning Secrets, not only for constantly showing Austin a good time, but for giving myself and Ultra 8201 a special scoop on the details of their Oct 2 show at the Beauty Bar featuring live bands - Voxtrot and Ocote Soul Sounds - and a DJ set by Loyauté Soundsystem, featuring members from your favorite French band. I will give you more information tomorrow - including a link to RSVP. Keep your eyes peeled.

I just have one hint for you:

Things to RSVP to:

Let me divulge a little background about these shows to you. First of all, both will definitely be fantastic events, with worthwhile, talented artists.

The first one, Annie Mac, DJ for BBC. You have probably heard her adorable accent on BBC Radio 1 and playing electronic mixes and generally great remixes. You can visit her site and listen to her latest "Mash Up." I am listening now, and it's great. Seriously, if you are not familiar with her - check her out online and in person at Barcelona on Sept 28. If you RSVP to rsvp@learningsecretsmusic.com right now -- or substantially before the night of the show -- you can get in at the discounted price of $7. Trust me, worth it.

The second one, Art Disaster No. 9 at the Beauty Bar is going to be huge. It is happening the night before ACL starts. So, if you are going, start getting ready for all the music you'll be listening to at Zilker Park by listening to a great line up of local bands and DJs. If you are not going to ACL, go out and enjoy yourself before all those outsiders* swarm into Austin and take it over for the weekend. RSVP to this event on ArtDisaster.com - which takes you to this Do512 site. I believe it is free to those who do. Plus, I am sponsoring this one. Look at my adorable new logo at the bottom of the flier.

* I am not opposed to outsiders. I, however, hate traffic and general lines and waiting.

All Tomorrow's Parties (Thurs)

But first, here is one for tonight:

Thursday:

I love Italians Do it Better.

I do have more to share about Thursday. Once I collect the missing fliers, I will repost this. Enjoy yourselves. Also, I really do suggest you see Ringo Deathstarr tonight.

KVRX Back to School Extravaganza

Another giveaway!

The KVRX ticket fairy has returned to bring you another opportunity to attend another KVRX sponsored show / party for free. This time, it is the KVRX "Back to School Extravaganza" this Friday, Sept 18, featuring Best Fwends, The Eastern Sea, No Mas Bodas, Fat Tony and The Low Lows. That is a pretty special line-up, guaranteed to be good.

This time, the show is at Mohawk. Tickets are $5 21+ and $7 under. For the lucky winner - free. Again, I am giving out 2 tickets to one person, because nobody really likes to go to parties solo.

How to enter:
1. Peruse my blog and think of ways you think I could improve it to your liking -- nothing blatantly rude, please. (Or if you just can't think of anything - yeah, right - just don't put anything.)
2. E-mail your suggestion to austinisburning@gmail.com
3. Include your full name and contact information (primary e-mail or phone number) so I can contact you if you win.

I will be keeping this post on the top of my page so that it is more visible. This is not to say I won't be updating; I will just be refreshing the date of this post. Keep checking back here to see the results. I will post the winner on Thursday the 17th.

Thank you and enjoy your week.
