I thought I'd pretend like I was some sort of major music blog and tell everyone a few of my favorite new songs (artists and videos) from 2011. I feel like a lot of really great stuff came out last year, or maybe I've just been paying closer attention.

"nothing can change this love" -TASHAKI MIYAKI

This LA band is so shrouded in mystery, which makes me like them even more. I have a chance to interview them soon, very excited. Been loving on all of their covers, including this and "All I have to do is dream," and self-titled EP.

"Don't Go Out Tonight" -IDIOT GLEE

Got a chance to interview James Friley last time he came to Austin to play a show. Haven't been able to stop listening to his music since. Super talented, and if you read his Twitter, all he talks about is food.

"July" -YOUTH LAGOON

From Boise, Idaho, this kid (Trevor Powers) has been getting the most attention out of this top 5 this past year. His debut album is 100% good, which is hard to come by.

"Sweetest Touch" -GROSS MAGIC

Obsessed with all of Teen Jamz, but this song is my favorite. Dig his (Sam McGarrigle) whole vibe.

I resisted Instagr.am for the longest time, because I never jump onto technology fads immediately and because I kind of hate(d) that whole revolution of using your phone to make 'vintage' and 'film'-like photos. But I did it and I can't lie, it's addicting. And I am also obsessed with constantly documenting my life as boring as it may get at times.

As one of the four finalists, she is putting on a show in collaboration with Marie Claire, LOFT and Rimmel London. I'm excited to see what she has produced; I have a feeling it will be a nice mixture of Austin vibes (since it's held at Mohawk) and upscale fashion, which I feel most shows are pretty polar to one or the other.

HAPPY DAY: IDIOT GLEE

I came across Idiot Glee during a weird time in my life. Okay, so I'm still kind of currently stuck in that time, since that was just earlier this month. I had been dumped, had a tumultuous Chicago trip, found a mouse in my apartment... I'll spare you the details. Suffice to say, I was in a weird emotional state: part confused, part melancholia, basic post-teen angst. Well, when I came across Idiot Glee through an email press release and gave the music a listen, I was oddly drawn in by the sound. Even if I didn't catch all of the lyrics immediately, just the droning, fuzzy sounds and deep, crooning voice were enough to hit a note in me.

James Friley, the man behind the music, was kind enough to let me ask him a few basic - and oddly prying - questions about Austin, Mormonism and movies.

What is better in Austin than where you're from?
The BBQ. It's good in Lexington, but really the beef brisket here is mmmmm...

What was your favorite experience in Austin?
The venue and locals were incredibly nice. I just get a good vibe from the place. Also, all of my meals were delicious. Touring is half about music, half about food.

Favorite city you've visited on tour (ever)?
Dang... umm, Berlin. Maybe.

Dream future destination?
Japan please!

And since he'd been interviewed by VICE solely about his Mormon background, I couldn't help but ask
Besides not drinking alcohol, what is the most Mormon thing about you?
Haha...I don't drink coffee*, either. I've tried it so many times. I want to like it. How do you people drink it? GROSS.

What was your favorite movie growing up? What is it now?
Growing up it was probably Star Wars. Or Dumb & Dumber. My siblings and I would watch Dumb & Dumber all the time... I'm not sure now. I like all the Coen Brothers films a lot, and I think Anchorman is hilarious. Bill Murray.

Favorite soundtrack?
Hmm... I'm going to cheat and say The Art Of Piano. It's about all the great pianists of the early 20th century. I saw it in high school and fell in love with every piece. I'm still trying to finish learning all of them.

If you were going to make music for a movie, what kind of movie would it be?
I scored a documentary last year on James Baker Hall. It was all solo piano pieces... I would love to do that again. A very dark, yet inspiring film... I think I'm better at scoring images with darker themes. But I'd have a blast with a western, or really anything. I want to become part of that world eventually.

What could it be about?
Anything except for a dog's death... can't handle dead dogs.

What projects are you working on? Anything major coming up?
Dunno about major, but I am recording and writing songs. I haven't figured out if it will be an EP or LP... also, a few tape labels want to do releases. So, likely 2 or 3 releases in the next 6 months. Also, heading to CMJ and SXSW next year.

I waited to post this interview to include these pictures of the set I caught, wish they had turned out better. His small show at 29th Street Ballroom with locals Boy Friend was great. It was probably the best intimate show I've seen in a long time. He even covered Bill Withers' Ain't No Sunshine, which has always been a favorite classic of mine.

It's been a long while since an event post.

Seeing Sleep Over open for Washed Out -- last Monday? -- was great. I hadn't seen the band play before but was very impressed with what I saw and heard. They will be departing on a Euro tour soon with Pure X, but beforehand, you have a chance to catch them live with support from other local acts Silent Diane and Survive.

I think it'll be a nice kick-start to Halloweekend 2011.

DATA HUSTLER: MALCOLM ELIJAH

When I first met Malcolm Elijah Welbourne, or just Eli, it was in an 'out' setting, maybe a house party, maybe a show. Anyway, a Facebook friendship was forged, and since, I've been able to have a somewhat sideline view of all of the spectacular art that he was producing and taking part of. Recently, a music video he produced for Pure X's "Easy" was featured on Gorilla Vs. Bear, FADER and other reputable sites. And while, I was very impressed by his work for Pure X (and will surely be when his second video for them debuts in the coming weeks), my eyes keep on going back to his Nitemare Gas cycles I found on his Vimeo.

I liked them so much, I thought I'd e-pester Eli until I got squeezed some questions out of him.

First of all -- what was your purpose behind the Nitemare Gas cycles? What are you trying to convey in them?

Eli: The Nitemare Gas vids were initially used in a sculptural installation piece in which I painted a large gas tank gold and gave the appearance as if it was feeding gas into a pseudo religious altar with a television, candles, small figurines of praying hands, lambs, cherubs... My thoughts were tracing around the ideas of some sort of contemporary alchemy, as if we were using a strange blend of gas' to create what we see on a television.

I liked the idea of different chemical reactions happening inside of a box that gives you an unstable image to look at. Sparks, odd lights, images phasing in and out of focus, etc. So the effect of the videos was actually a product of the format and machine you were viewing it in.

The video itself was intended to be something of a living portrait. I left the prompt for the subjects intentionally vague so there was a degree of self-interpretation and a natural honesty that came through to the camera. Some people were nervous, unsure... some people ate the camera up and posed, got into characters, shot sultry looks. No matter how they acted, it in a sense was an honest portrayal of how one behaves when given a set of circumstances to react to. Just video chemistry. I couldn't have fully anticipated what would come out, so it really was the essence of everyone's effort that made the video, I just tried to display the subtleties I caught.

The scenario I had imagined was a self-induced gas chamber that gives you wide sensation of dreamlike experiences ranging from euphoria, terror, and disorientation. The sculpture was like looking into a crystal ball and peering into the states of others intoxication.

How did you get into making film / art / music... what order did it come in?

I think there was always interest in all 3, and they each influence each other, but my exposure and practice of them was very ordered.

My first interest was music. Started playing upright bass in school orchestra and bass guitar when I was 10, but my father is a musician, and I had been exposed to music all my life. I definitely made it a goal to become a multi-instrumentalist young. Picked up guitar, cello, piano, mandolin, and eventually synthesis which is where I'm focusing now. Collecting vintage synthesizers and pondering sound design/production have been a theme lately, but I value all instruments. I've also been lucky enough to work with the local synth shop Switched On as well. I've played in a lot of various bands around Austin. I'm currently involved with Silent Diane and Sleep Over.

Art came second:

I always was interested in animation and drew a lot growing up, but I think when I was about 16, I started thinking more about conceptual art and analogous relationships to humans ----> images and objects.

Music definitely is a catalyst for my thinking though. Music that inspires me has direct visual connotation on my dome. Eventually, I met some of my best friends in Totally Wreck and our sense of humor and absurdist kind of spirit got channeled into this fucked up art collective based around Internet archaeology and occult fantasy, which really stimulated my interest and gave me people to circulate ideas around.

Video/Film/Photography are a format I'm the most interested in right now. I think that video is one of the most relevant or influential mediums because of how many media devices make it accessible and palatable to human attention. It doesn't have to revolve around exclusive circles or gallery settings, although I do like to prepare a certain experience in which my work is viewed, I like the flexibility of it.

Video is more of a linear, time-based artform which is relative to my experience with music. Photography is also relevant to me in a sense where I can draw upon subtleties of intimacy and activity in a single image.

I feel very young at it, but the most passionate.

What artists in or outside of Austin are you into right now?

Im unsure of how to satisfy this question, but...

Im lucky enough to say my favorite artists in Austin are among my friends. Even if they don't. Ben Aqua, Juan Cisneros, Amanda Joy, Ryan Davis, Scott Gelber, Aaron Flynn, Seth Nemec, Zak Loyd, Melanie Clemmons, Tommy Blackburn, Carlos Rosales Silva, Dylan Reece, and many more. Some of the most interesting art I feel is not made by people who consider themselves artists by trade, whether it's conscious or incidental.

I've found a lot of inspiration from classic video artists like Toshio Matsumoto, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Nam Joon Paik, and Kenneth Anger.

People creating post-ironic, Internet-based phenomena art like Ryan Trecartin and Ryder Ripps make me smile with their art. Lots of net art surfacing and gaining aesthetic cohesion.

Sometimes I don't even know who it is that is inspiring me with sites like tumblr.... Any random image I want to bookmark I post here.

I was recently asked to model for a new Austin blog Femme Et Vélo by Shari of Charm School Vintage. After a short style session, hair and makeup, 4-5 hours of shooting around town and lbs of sweat, Zach Hunt (on film) and Mike Andrick (on digital) snapped what seemed like a million photos of me and my 1970s Schwinn Breeze. The photos are starting to crawl online, so I thought I'd show off past snaps from the blog.

Witnessing a photograph by Ellen Jane Rogers often feels like attempting to solve an impossible puzzle or looking into the labyrinth of the complex mind of a genius.

The London-based photographer seems to capture scenes of something mysterious and titillating that brings the voyeur out in anyone who views them. Having received her master’s in photography at Goldsmiths College, young Rogers, only 27, has accomplished a lot as a fine arts fashion photographer from being published in i-D magazine to being interviewed by numbers of reputable publications.

Her technique remains a secret, but I was happy to have gotten a glimpse into her persona and soul with this small interview with the photographer.

When did you first discover your knack?

To be brutally honest, I still don’t think I fully understand the knack. I think the knack is quite like an automated response to what you work on; I still have to dig deep to get what I want. But perhaps I have developed a knack on a personal level in regards to pouring my insular feelings into my work.

When you dream, what do you often dream about?

My dreams are never exceptionally nice. I think they absorb my angst, sexuality, deepest fears. There is a lot of black fog.

Artists typically echo their life experiences through their art; how do your experiences resonate in yours?

On a superficial level they reflect my obsessions with female beauty, but in terms of analogues, I could be literal and say there are direct references to my life experiences, like my mother dying. I mean, I could argue that everyone I have encountered in my life has helped to shape a semantic mantra that my art work is lead by, but what artist doesn’t have a personality that will affect their work? Can one exist without the other at all?

What is your favourite part of the photography process?

I could definitely tell you my least favourite! I hate to scan the work in, I have something in the region of 100 scans to do a week, this can become quite monotonous. I think having them complete and seeing them in print is my favourite part.

In models, what do you look for?

I do a lot of castings at modeling agencies to find a girl who is comfortable with herself; I don’t like shooting girls who seem self conscious. It doesn’t translate well in my images. I guess I am looking for someone who seems quite empowered. At the same time, they must be versatile enough to act as the blank canvas any director will need them to be. I have seen other girls look entirely different when shot by other photographs, because good models have to be able to act as a vessel for the directors’ visions.

My muse Hana is the perfect balance. For me, she is beautiful, strong, adventurous and perfectly acts the part she is cast in. I think she has mastered the art of empathy and is intelligent enough to emulate what I seek to portray.

What is the question you find people asking you all too often?

What techniques do you use? What camera do you use? What film do you use? The answers to these questions are hard earned. To suddenly give them away to anyone who asks seems inappropriate.

Is there a sort of exhibitionist undertone to your photos? (Not necessarily in a sexual sense but of the soul)

I think my work is an inversion of myself yeah.

Do you aim to capture a sense of reality or surreality?

I consider it to be a continuous narrative, not one that exists, but one I can add branches to give roots to. So I guess in that sense they are my own tales of fantasy, not so disconnected that that might be surreal, at least not to me.

What kind of spaces do you find yourself the most productive or inspired in? Rural, urban, cluttered, empty?

I feel much more comfortable in a cluttered environment, some with many textures and things to stimulate your mind. I think, also, I have a predilection to certain buildings and eras that inspire me.

What songs are on your "life soundtrack"? Songs that you can go back to again and again.

Rachel's Music for Egon Schiele is one of my favourite albums.

Filín: a new boutique

So there's a new boutique in town. I already featured them on my Nylon Daily newsletter, but I felt like I should give them a little more love with my blog. So, in case you don't subscribe, this boutique is called Filín, and it's still in progress, but it's definitely got great stock already.

I feel like it's a great place to pick up daily basics, like her LnA stuff, or rad party dresses like her Blaque Label stuff. She also has a very stylized vintage rack in the store by local vintage vendors Gypsy Sun -- sorry, I accidentally attributed the vintage to Venus Envy in my Nylon shout out! The name sound oddly similar to me.

Here's the lady behind the store: Emily Antonetti-Elford. I find that well-dressed shop owners typically equals a beautifully stocked store. So, Filín should be as cool as Emily, who is incredibly cool.

I ended up picking up a vintage piece -- a lace crop top with buttons down the back and a white Peter Pan collar. Kind of gothy in a real way, but appropriate for summer wear. I'll style it better when I wear it out, I swear.

Anyway, all I can ever really say at the end of these things is go check it out for yourself. No one is paying me to tell you this, so you know I actually endorse it.

So a couple of life updates, that can also be of interest to the general public *possibly.

+ I am going to be a guest judge at this year's senior design show at UT, called Innovation. The show is open to the public and is apparently pretty cool/well-produced or so I have heard. It's free and open to the public. So if you'd like to see what it's all about, go.

+ I recently got boss lady Audrie San Miguel (Prototype) to write an Op Ed on the SXSW free events debacle. Read it here. It's gotten so many views/likes/shares/tweets. I'm pretty psyched on that. I am really glad so many people have taken an interest and are showing their support.

+ Bleach Online is releasing the Spring issue "Waves" next week and having a party to celebrate. It'll be Wednesday (4/20) night at US Art Authority or "29th Street Ballroom." I'm excited about this as well, because I wrote a couple interviews, edited and styled a couple shoots. I may or may not appear in one myself... oy.
